Read below an interview with Coach Manj Singh about his first season: Get 'em right Coach!!
Coach, thanks for joining us. Before we start, how would you sum up your season in a few words?
The great legendary Dusty Rhodes said it best with his promo “HARD TIMES”
We always love a good wrestling analogy. Speaking of dealing with hard times, how was your first year?
Well, let me start by saying how much of a blessing it is to be the head football coach at Glen Ridge High School, and be part of a community with so much support! When I went to the interview with Glen Ridge Athletic Director Rob Hill and David Manzo it was very comfortable as well as feeling at home without even getting the job yet. I was hired on 6/6/2022 a day after my 45th birthday which was the greatest gift ever. A dream job with an uphill battle ahead of me.
What was your first memory of the season?
We started the season OTA’s with 14 players. We went into our first game with 22 players and only 18 suited up vs Cedar Grove. We took a huge loss of 50-15 but fought until the end and that’s when I said my coaching background is what will help me succeed.
Where did you get your start in coaching?
Montclair NJ town league 2000/01 was where I first started, then over the years worked my way up to Don Bosco & Saint Joseph’s (Montvale), working around some of the best coaches not only in NJ but the country.
Did you go into the season with any preconceived idea of the outcome?
Did it look like a long road ahead? Yup. Did I feel like quitting? Nope. That is because I knew how special this team is and how badly they wanted to change the culture to become a winning program. My coaching staff was essential to getting there. My team was made up of Assistant Head Coach Chris Ferrara, Defensive Coordinator (long-time GR Coach) Carl Houser Jr, OLine/ DLine coach Rob Rollo, and Quality Control Coach Tim Aumack (aka Mack Trucks). We knew we had a long road ahead, so we put in a lot of time to get the best results.
What were your biggest accomplishments in this first season?
We put together the pieces and proceeded forward each game with fundamentals, most importantly. I would say our biggest accomplishment as a team was winning the Group 1 Regional Invitational Championship. We were all very proud because it was Glen Ridge’s first trophy in 40 YEARS! As far as individual accomplishments, we had our first Division 1 Commit in over 30 years, Jake Russell heading to the Valpariso Beacons. Our QB Dylan O’Neil broke the single-season record for passing with 1,598 yds and also threw for more yards this season than he did in the previous 2 seasons combined. We had several players win all-conference and All-Group 1. We are turning into a very competitive football program and one day we are hoping to bring home the sectional or the group 1 state championship.
Coach, this has been really great to hear about your first year, and excited for all the success that is to come.
